Course info
Combining language proficiency development and study skills, the EARP courses provide an 8-week or a 4-week preparation for students who intend to study at York, at other universities in Britain or in their home countries. The content of the courses includes: academic writing: structure and argument in essays and reports; using academic sources, practice and detailed feedback on academic essays, assignments and reports; speaking: development of orals skills for seminars and discussions, academic presentation skills; listening and pronunciation work: input on strategies; practice in note-taking in lectures; reading skills: strategies for dealing with long complex texts, speeding up reading; reading to write; research methods: survey based project work, questionnaire design, research reports; lectures by visiting speakers from various disciplines. Students are assigned to classes based on an entry test. As the course progresses there is more one-to-one tutorial work as students are prepared for the independent nature of study in a UK University. There is a social programme including social events, trips and a weekly sports night. The EARP courses are accredited by The British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP).
